New drug Varenicline
We are aware that the NHS England has announced the approval of Varenicline, a medication to help quit smoking, it is believed this drug will be available through the NHS in England within the next few months.
Varenicline is a daily tablet given over a few months, is as effective as vapes and more effective than nicotine replacement gum or patches, NHS England says. The drug, which helps reduce cravings and can ease withdrawal symptoms, was available a few years ago on the NHS under the brand name Champix but was withdrawn due impurities found in the medicine. The new version has been approved as safe.
At this time, we do not have detailed information regarding the medicine, prescribing guidelines, eligibility criteria, or supply logistics for Varenicline. Additionally, it remains unclear whether this medication will be initiated by general practitioners or if it will require intervention by specialist secondary care.
Our team are still waiting for more information about prescribing, but we are committed to keeping our patients informed and will provide updates as soon as more information becomes available.
In the meantime, Varenicline is being offered in conjunction with pharmacy and council-led stop smoking services across the country, with smokers wanting to quit able to self-refer to these services by visiting the NHS Better Health website here: https://www.nhs.uk/better-health/quit-smoking/
