Plymouth Hospitals set for changes to records

We wanted to share some great news about hospital care in Devon. A new electronic patient record (EPR) system is being introduced across Devon’s major hospitals: University Hospitals Plymouth, Torbay and South Devon. While this doesn’t affect those of us in General Practice directly, we know it’s a big step forward for patients receiving hospital care in the region.

The new system, developed by Epic, should make hospital visits easier by creating a single, secure digital record for each patient. This means you won’t have to keep repeating your medical history to different hospital staff, and your care teams will have quick access to up-to-date information, helping to provide safer, more efficient care.

The system is already in use for patients of Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, with an included service portal called MY CARE. This lets patients view their health information, manage appointments, and communicate with hospital teams online. Over the next few years, this system will roll out to Torbay and Plymouth hospitals, starting in spring 2026.

This change is designed to streamline care across Devon’s hospitals, improving communication between teams and enhancing the quality and safety of patient care. We hope this update is useful and reassuring if you or your loved ones ever need hospital care in the future. For more details, keep an eye on updates from your local hospitals.
